Our BBC filmed Yellowstone a few years ago in glorious HD and they made a fabulous job of it, definitely, five out of five to them. It needed more scenery and far more animals. My grand children will get bored watching that. The first twenty five minutes show mud pots and the crystalline terraces at mammoth, in close up and for far too long. On a sunny day with no wind and the reflections of mountains in the background it looks spectacular ! We went there during May when it still had a thick layer of ice on that was starting to break up and it looked amazing. The filming of Yellowstone Lake was done on an overcast and windy day which made it look ordinary. Surely, if you are going to film the most beautiful National Park in America then you would pick your days. What about the top predator, the wolves ? Coyotes, marmots, mule deer, etc. The only animals in the film are this one family of black bears, bison, elk and pronghorn. Grizzly,s have long claws for digging ground squirrels and roots not for climbing whereas a Black bear has shorter and sharper claws made for climbing. There is no sign of a hump on its back but more importantly that the bear and her cubs almost run up a tree. We also believe that the bear that is shown in the film and said by the commentator to be a grizzly is in fact a Black bear. The commentator States early in the film that Yellowstone is situated in the North east corner of Wyoming, but even us coming from England know that Yellowstone is in the North WEST corner of Wyoming, typical schoolboy error ! Very disappointed ! Having waited for nearly a year for this blu ray to arrive, my wife and I find it very poorly made and it contains several errors. The film keeps skipping between scenes of the different islands without a clear indication of which islands are being shown at any particular time. Unfortunately it would not really have helped me on my planning objective either. When I took my own amateur video over the same scenery I had booked a Doors-Off flight so that I would not get the reflections.įor me such a film does not meet my souvenir objective as I could only bear to watch it once. However the camera motion was jerky and there were reflections from the helicopter window. Yes there is some excellent scenery - my favourite was the scenes of volcanic activity from the helicopter over Kilauea. The well spoken commentary comes as a relief but its content is rather limited. Unfortunately the scenes are generally jerky, very repetitive and the similar sounding music soon starts to grate on the ears. The film tries to be very artistic with beautiful scenes backed by instrumental mood music interspersed with some informative commentary. The 0:55 minutes seemed an incredibly long time. Why was so much valuable time being wasted showing very similar scenes when there is surely so much to be shown in only 0:55 minutes? Towards the end of the disc I kept looking at my watch wondering how much longer is this going on for. The opening scenes of the waves crashing on the rocks started to get me alarmed. That will pass very quickly and enjoyably I thought. The run time is stated to be 0:55 minutes. I got the impression that the budget was very limited and was overspent. The concept, content, filming, editing and audio are all very amateurish. Was it fit for either of these purposes? Not in my opinion. And when that came and passed I was intending to use it as a souvenir of the excellent holiday we had. I had intended to use it to prepare for my Summer holiday 2014. I waited a long time to receive delivery of this Blu-ray disc - 507 days actually - 24 September 2013 till.
